Last year I started a weekly blog that included my surprise fantasy picks for each week of the college football season. Each week I picked the players that were flying under the radar and this year I have continued my weekly surprise fantasy picks. Last week I finished with a 5-4-3 record including two Big Winners with UCF RB Ronnie Weaver who ran for 180 yds and 2 TD's and Illinois' defense which held Purdue to just 205 yds and 10 pts! Overall on the season I am 64-28-17 (70%). To check out last week's picks click here. Here are my picks for this week.

 

QUARTERBACKS:
My QB’s of the week are: Ryan Lindley, San Diego St, Tyler Bray, Tennessee and GJ Kinne, Tulsa

Ryan Lindley, San Diego St-Here is a name that has been around awhile but many people living on the East Coast may not know much about him. Lindley has been a 3-year starter for the Aztecs and has been one of the major reasons for the turn-around under HC Hoke. He is avg 282 ypg (53.4%) with a 15-7 ratio. This week he takes on my #119 pass defense in Colorado St that is giving up an unbelievable 69.7% completion rate with a 19-2 TD-Int ratio. My computer projects 338 pass yds for the Aztecs and I’ll call for Lindley to have one of his best days this season.

Tyler Bray, Tennessee-Bray will be making his first career start here but he does have some experience already this season with 302 pass yds (54.3%) and a 2-2 ratio. Bray was in for the spring (PS#17) so he has been on campus for 10 months. This week he takes on my #116 pass defense in Memphis which is allowing 276 pass ypg (66%) with a 25-5 TD-Int ratio. I’ll call for Bray to have a big day in his very first start as the Vols get the much needed win.

GJ Kinne, Tulsa-Kinne has been steady for the Golden Hurricane avg 256 pass ypg (59%) with a 16-7 ratio and last week led a 4Q comeback against Notre Dame (completed a 3rd and 26 pass) to give Tulsa their biggest win in program history. This week he takes on my #110 pass defense in Rice which is giving up 287 pass ypg (63%) with a 18-4 ratio and my computer calls for 500+ total yds for the Tulsa offense with Kinne easily having 250 pass yds in this one.

RUNNING BACKS:

My RB’s of the week are: Lennon Creer, Louisiana Tech, JJ Di Luigi, BYU and Pat Shed, UAB

Lennon Creer, Louisiana Tech-Creer has three straight games with more than 120 rush yds and last week against Boise St ran for 149 yds (4.3) and 2 TD’s. This week he faces a Fresno St run defense that gave up just 12 yds in their last game against San Jose St but were gashed earlier this year for 200+ yds Utah St, Mississippi and FCS Cal Poly. My computer projects 181 rush yds for the Bulldogs and I’ll call for Creer to top the 100 yd mark for a 4th straight game.

JJ Di Luigi, BYU-Luigi has been one of the bright spots for a Cougar offense that struggled earlier this season with a frosh QB. He leads the team in rushing with 601 yds (5.4) and 5 TD’s and also leads the team in receiving as well with 318 yds (9.6) and a TD. This week he goes up against a UNLV defense that is giving up 427 total ypg including 281 rush ypg (6.4) the last four weeks. Di Luigi should easily have 100+ rush/rec yds in this one and maybe a TD or two.

Pat Shed, UAB-Shed leads the Blazers with 592 rush yds (6.0) and 2 TD’s and last week had 176 yds (6.1) and 2 TD’s against Southern Miss. This week he takes on a Marshall defense that is allowing 175 rush ypg (4.3) and my computer calls for 218 rush yds for the Blazers. Shed is definitely a name that you may not have heard yet which makes him one of this week’s surprise picks.

WIDE RECEIVERS:

My WR’s of the week are: Chris Rainey, Florida, Robert Woods, USC and Denarius Moore, Tennessee

Chris Rainey, Florida-Rainey returned back from suspension last week and was a big contributor in the run game with 84 rush yds (5.3) and a TD. This week he goes up against a Vanderbilt defense that has given up 500+ yds the last three games and I’ll call for Rainey to have 100+ ttl yds rush/rec as he continues to get back in the flow and makes the Gator offense much more dangerous.

Robert Woods, USC-Woods is probably the best frosh WR in the entire country and leads the Trojans with 574 yds (14.7) and 6 TD’s. This week he goes up against a Arizona St pass defense that ranks #16 in pass defense rankings but has given up 200+ pass yds in every game this season. My computer calls for 305 pass yds and I think Woods could get to the 100 yd mark in this one.

Denarius Moore, Tennessee-Moore leads the Vols with 24 rec (20.2) and 5 TD’s and last week had a monster game against South Carolina with 228 yds (38.0!) and a TD. This week he goes up against a poor Memphis pass defense (given up 25 pass TD’s this season!) and could easily top the 100 yd mark again even with a true Frosh QB starting for the Vols (see surprise QB picks)!

DEFENSES:

My Top Defenses of the Week: BYU, Boston College and Tennessee

BYU vs UNLV-The Cougar defense has been much improved since HC Mendenhall took over the DC duties about a month ago. They gave up just 273 ttl yds to high-powered San Dieg St, held TCU to just 3 pts in the first 27 minutes of the game and two weeks ago held Wyoming to just 173 total yds. The Cougars are off a bye and this week will get a UNLV that is already looking towards next year as HC Hauck is playing many of his frosh recruits. My computer calls for just 15 pts and 238 ttl yds for the Rebels which will give the Cougar defense another solid performance.

Boston College vs Wake Forest-The Eagles’ defense has performed admirably this season despite the offense’s struggles and the last two weeks have held Maryland and Clemson to just 242 total ypg including just 65 rush ypg (2.3). Their opponent this week Wake Forest depends heavily on their run game which does not bode well for the Demon Deacons. My computer calls for just 279 ttl yds for Wake as the Eagles try to gain bowl eligibility down the stretch.

Tennessee vs Memphis-This is a surprise pick as the Vols are giving up 447 total ypg in their last 7 games including 544 yds to another CUSA team in UAB. I think this week will be different as their opponent Memphis is avg just 281 ttl yds and the Vols need to win their final four games to get to bowl eligibility. My computer calls for just 281 ttl yds for Memphis and 13 pts which would give the Vols’ D their best numbers against FBS teams this year.

Upset of the Week:

Navy over East Carolina

Navy still needs one more win to clinch their Poinsettia Bowl bid since they fell to Duke LW, 34-31. Navy was held to just 148 rush yds by a Duke D all’g 197 rush ypg. QB Dobbs is avg 119 ypg (51%) with a 7-4 ratio but threw for a career high 227 and 2 TD LW and is the tm’s top rusher (552, 3.2). EC is off a 49-35 loss to UCF and has UAB on deck next Thurs. QB Davis is avg 292 ypg (65%) with a 21-11 ratio giving the Pirates a solid edge on off (#38-71) but Navy has the edge on def (#74-104). EC has all’d 184 rush ypg (4.5) and hasn’t faced an option team this year and Navy gets the bounce back win.

The tenth week of the college football season is already here and there may be some owners looking for some under the radar fantasy options. Check out who we think could fill in nicely for fantasy teams in Week 10.

Quarterbacks

Nathan Scheelhaase QB Illinois vs. Michigan:
This kid is playing well and is coming off a monster game against Purdue in which he threw for almost 200 yards and four scores and also added 118 yards on the ground. He gets to take his shots this week against a Wolverines pass defense that ranks 117th in the nation. Look for another strong effort from this youngster and a whole bunch of yards and scores.

Ross Jenkins QB Louisiana Tech vs. Fresno State:
Jenkins and the La Tech offense are finally starting to get things going like many fantasy owners had envisioned earlier in the season. Two weeks ago he threw for over 400 yards and tossed three scores. While he may not hit those lofty numbers, he could have a very productive day against the Bulldogs. He could certainly go for around 250 yards and a couple of scores.

Brock Mansion QB Cal vs. Washington State:
Mansion came in for injured starter Kevin Riley and performed admirably everything considered. He will start this week against the lowly Cougars and their terrible pass defense that ranks 107th in the country. The Cal offense has been struggling recently, but seeing the Cougars could be the remedy the Bears seek. A couple of touchdown passes could easily be in store for Mansion this week.

Bryan Ellis QB UAB vs. Marshall:
Ellis has been good while taking the reigns of the Blazers offense. He accounted for 247 total yards and 4 scores last week against Southern Miss. He could find some more success this week when he faces the Thundering Heard and their 82nd ranked pass defense. Expect a solid effort from Ellis this week.

Running Backs

Michael Dyer/Onterrio McCaleb RB Auburn vs. Chattanooga:
Both of these backs have been very productive over the past few weeks and that should continue this week in a blowout win over Chattanooga. We don’t expect to see much running from Cam Newton as the coaches will probably save him for next week, so both Dyer and McCaleb could get more carries. It is very possible that go over the 100-yard plateau and also both find the end zone on at least one occasion this week.

Jamie Harper RB Clemson vs. North Carolina State:
With Andre Ellington out two weeks because of turf toe, Harper jumps to the forefront of the Clemson rushing game. He has proved to be a tough runner and a very effective pass catcher, so he could put up some nice totals over the next two weeks. A game of 100 total yards and a score seem really possible for Harper this week against the Wolfpack.

Roy Helu Jr RB Nebraska vs. Iowa State:
He is white hot coming off an all-time great performance against Missouri. This senior ran for a school record 307 yards and 3 touchdowns. With a hobbled Taylor Martinez at QB, the Huskers may look to rely even more heavily on Helu and that could be a very good thing for fantast owners considering the Cyclones rush defense is ranked 99th in the country. Another day of 100 plus yards and a couple of scores seem highly possible for Helu this week. Start him and reap the rewards.

Tauren Poole RB Tennessee vs. Memphis:
Poole has been productive this season despite playing a killer schedule. This week the schedule lightens significantly with the Tigers and their 100th ranked rush defense. The entire Vols offense should be able to move the ball at will this week and Poole should be a huge part of that offensive explosion. He could easily top 100 yards rushing and add a score or two to boot.


Wide Receivers & Tight Ends

Chris Rainey WR Florida vs. Vanderbilt:
Rainey returned in a big way last week against Georgia recording 84 yards and a score on 16 carries. If he is listed as a WR in your league, he might hold some value with the number of carries he could receive for the Gators. He is a risky play as who knows how many carries he will see each week, but might be worth the game against Vanderbilt. The Commodores rank 90th in total defense and could give up a few big plays to Rainey this week.

Jarius Wright WR Arkansas vs. South Carolina:
Wright looks to be in position to be a fantasy factor with the season ending injury to Greg Childs. Wright had 87 yards and 2 scores last week against Vandy and could match that this week against South Carolina. The Game Cocks rank 105th against the pass and could have real trouble stopping the Razor Backs this week. Wright could find plenty of yardage and scores in his immediate future.

Denarius Moore WR Tennessee vs. Memphis:
Moore had a monster game last week against South Carolina with 228 yards receiving and a score. This week he faces a bad Tigers pass defense that ranks a miserable 115th in the nation. Fantasy owners could feel pretty good starting this week and could easily see another big effort from Moore.

Cody Sparks TE Tulane vs. Southern Miss:
Sparks has been productive and could have another decent day against Southern Miss this week. He has scored three this season and considering the lack of fantasy production, Sparks could help owners going forward. He may not get a ton of yards, but he has good potential to score this week.


Sneaky Play Defenses

Georgia vs. Idaho State
